The Northern Irishman had been in good form this year, and managed finishes of 4-5-4-2-6 for his five PGA Tour starts in 2019, but hadn’t managed to win a ranking event. He put that right at Sawgrass though and is now the +750 favorite to go on and claim a first ever Green Jacket at Augusta next month.
McIlroy held off a strong British challenge on the final day of The Players Championship, with both Eddie Pepperall (-14) and Tommy Fleetwood (-13) finishing high up on the leaderboard. His main competitor up the stretch was, however, American Jim Furyk, who rolled back the years with a final round of 67 to set a target of -15 in the clubhouse.
McIlroy was able to beat that thanks to a birdie-birdie-par-par finish at Sawgrass, which saw him finish one shot clear of Furyk on -16 after carding a final day score of 70.
The 29-year-old wasn’t keen to celebrate too wildly and his attention is turning immediately to Augusta National, where he will start as the favorite with the online sportsbooks.
“I’ve started the second phase of my career. I’ve learned a lot in the last 10-11 years and feel I can make the next 10-11 years even better,” he said.
“It’s a massive win on a course on which I’ve had mixed results. I had to show a lot of character out there.
“I’m just really proud of myself the way I played the last few holes.
“I kept telling myself on the way to the 17th tee, just make three more good swings, that’s all you need to do and this thing is yours.
“To step up and make those three good swings, it’s very satisfying knowing that it’s in there when it needs to be.
“If I go to Augusta with a similar game and attitude then I think I’ve got a great chance.”
