Betting on the Oscars and wanna know the odds?
Awards season reaches its high point this Sunday with the 2023 Academy Awards.
The event has found new popularity since the rise of legalized mobile wagering, as sites like FanDuel are offering odds on the potential winners in several categories, which we’ll outline below.
Bet on the Oscars Here:
The Oscars are one of the crown jewels in a series of events that, while not sporting contests, lend themselves to wagering nonetheless.
Fans can’t watch the action unfold, but they can place money on their preferred or expected outcome based on their knowledge of the participants and likeliest results.
Naturally, this same philosophy applies to non-sporting events. The 2020 U.S. Presidential Election is the best example.
U.S. Presidential Election Betting
In 2020, European sportsbook Betfair took over $560 million in bets on the outcome of the U.S. Presidential Election between Joe Biden and Donald Trump – by far the greatest amount wagered on an event in Betfair’s almost 25-year history.
U.S.-based sportsbooks didn’t offer wagering on the 2020 Presidential Election. But if laws change, it’s no stretch to predict that a Presidential Election could be a billion-dollar handle wagering event in the United States.
Other potential events to be potentially approved for wagering include:
Not just the Oscars, but this same approach could work for the Grammys, the Emmys, even the ESPYs.
These could be proposed as over/under bets (will the S&P 500 be over or under 3,999 on July 1?) or props (S&P 500 to reach 4,000 by July 1) with corresponding odds.
- Who’s Tom Brady’s next girlfriend?
- Which power couple is next to head for divorce?
- What happens first, U.S. gas price rise to $4 per gallon or fall to $2 per gallon?
Bets like these are available offshore, and perhaps U.S.-based books are next!
