Matteo Berrettini defeats his Italian counterpart, Lorenzo Sonego, to advance to the Second Round of Wimbledon.
After three days on court at the All England Club, Matteo Berrettini has defeated his Italian counterpart, Lorenzo Sonego, to head into the draw for the Second Round.
Berrettini, the 2021 Wimbledon finalist, won the First Round match on Thursday, July 6 in four sets. The game ended 6-7, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 following a first-set triumph from Lorenzo Sonego.
This Wimbledon victory marks Matteo Berrettini’s first Grand Slam victory of the season. It is his first victory since Monte-Carlo Masters back in April, where he defeated Francisco Cerundulo. His next match against Holger Rune marked the beginning of a poor streak of matches for the Italian.
With this victory under his belt, Berrettini can now progress into the Second Round with some much-needed momentum. The 15-seed Alex de Minaur awaits Berrettini, which many have predicted will be a tough test of his physical condition and ability.
After being forced to withdraw from the tournament last season with COVID-19, Berrettini will be channelling his 2021 performances which saw him progress to the Wimbledon Final. Novak Djokovic defeated him that day, making him the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon all in the same calendar year.
