DraftKings Progressive Parlays Explained

DraftKings has launched its new Progressive Parlay feature, but what is it? Here’s everything you need to know.

The new Progressive Parlay feature has now launched with DraftKings for users just in time for the NFL playoffs, plus NBA and NCAA basketball seasons. But what is a Progressive Parlay?

The short version? Progressive Parlays are like regular parlays, but with “consolation prizes” built in. We’ll explain below.

This article will serve as your guide to placing a Progressive Parlay within the DraftKings App.

What is a Progressive Parlay?

Like a traditional parlay, Progressive Parlays ask the bettor to combine multiple selections into a single wager in exchange for an increased payout.

But unlike traditional parlays, the Progressive Parlay protects you against losses to an extent by still allowing for payouts in the case of (or possibly more) wagers within the parlay losing.

The potential for returns also influences the margin for error. For example, a three-team parlay only allows for one loss in order to receive some winnings for your wager, while a 12-team parlay allows for up to losing wagers. We’ll explain in our chart below.

What Can I Bet On in a Progressive Parlay?

At the current time, NFL, NBA, and NCAA Basketball are the sports available for Progressive Parlays wagering.

There is speculation that Major League Baseball will be a good fit for this style of wager, but we’ll have to wait until spring to find out if DraftKings adds MLB Progressive Parlays.

Progressive Parlays can be placed using various player prop bets. Some examples from the three available sports:

NFL

  • Passing Yards
  • Rushing Yards
  • Receiving Yards

NBA

  • Points
  • Rebounds
  • Assists

NCAA Basketball

  • Points
  • Points, Rebounds, and Assists (combined)

How To Place A Progressive Parlay

Here’s a step-by-step guide on placing an NFL Progressive Parlay:

  1. Log in to DraftKings on your mobile device (*Important: You must be on a mobile device to place a Progressive Parlay, while using App Version 4.29 or higher).
  2. Find your way to the applicable League’s page (in this case, NFL).
  3. At the top of the screen, select Progressive parlay in the Menu bar (this should be one of the first few items listed, right after “Game Lines.”
  4. Begin selecting the Player Props you wish to wager. You can do all passing yards, all rushing yards, or mix and match. For example, if you wanted to parlay Patrick Mahomes’ passing yards with Christian McCaffrey’s rushing yards and Amon-Ra St. Brown’s receiving yards, you can do that. Each player has a predetermined yardage total, all you need to do is select over or under.
  5. Once you’ve made at least 3 selections (but you can make as many as 12), place your bet. The terms and payouts will display on the screen for your review.

How Many Legs of My Parlay Can I Lose & Still Win Money?

Now we get to the interesting, unique part of Progressive Parlays.

As explained above, you can use anywhere from 3-12 legs in one Progressive parlay, and while your payout obviously increases with a greater number of legs, so does your margin for error… sort of.

There are ranges for missing wagers that will force the bettor to choose between upside and protection. See below:

Below is a chart displaying the exact number of legs in a parlay, compared with the payout you’ll receive depending on the number of losses involved. This may seem obvious, but the fewer losses, the higher the payout.

Real-Money Examples

Here are some real-money examples of what you’d win on a $100 wager in each scenario:

  • 3-Leg Parlay with ALL wins: $125 plus $100 stake for a total of $225.
  • 3-Leg Parlay with one Loss: $25 plus $100 stake for a total of $125.
  • 8-Leg Parlay with ALL wins: $8,000 plus $100 stake for a total of $8,100.
  • 12-Leg Parlay with one loss: $3,000 plus $100 stake for a total of $3,100.

“Return Wager” simply means you get your money back as if the wager never happened.

What Else Should I Know About Progressive Parlays?

So, we’ve run through how to place a Progressive Parlay at DraftKings. We have also covered the stats behind winning or losing a set number of legs. But what else do we need to know as competent sports bettors?

Void Events

If one of the wagers is voided due to a player sitting out of the game, the Progressive parlay reduces by one leg. For example, a player who sits out in a four-leg parlay reduces the bet to a three-leg parlay.

If a voided event results in the parlays dropping below three legs, the entire wager will be voided.

Pushes

In progressive parlays, pushes count as losses. So if you bet on Patrick Mahomes over 265 yards, and he throws for exactly 265 yards, that’s a loss.

Progressive Parlays Explained

Fortunately, most player props are in half-yard increments (for example, 265.5 yards) to prevent this exact scenario.

Is There Anywhere Progressive Parlays Are NOT Available?

Progressive Parlays are available anywhere DraftKings Sportsbook operates, with the exception of the states of Arizona, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
